In cases of excessive sweating, other treatment methods are sometimes used alongside tap water iontophoresis – for example, antiperspirants or medications that are applied topically to the skin or taken as tablets. A combination of treatments may be advisable if iontophoresis alone is not sufficient or cannot be carried out on all affected areas of the body.
However, when several therapies are used simultaneously, it can be difficult to determine exactly which treatment is contributing to the effect or which treatment is causing possible side effects? If problems arise, it may be helpful to temporarily pause one of the therapies. This makes it easier to determine which method is affecting the symptoms.
There are also situations in which the treatments may interfere with one another. For example, it is not recommended to use antiperspirants immediately alongside tap water iontophoresis. The reason: for iontophoresis, the current must flow through the sweat pores – but antiperspirants block these. This can impair the effectiveness of tap water iontophoresis.
