Yes, that is possible. The aim of the treatment is to reduce sweating to a normal level during the maintenance phase and keep it stable. You should therefore only use tap water iontophoresis as often as necessary – and as infrequently as possible. Anything beyond this is considered over-treatment.
Over-treatment usually becomes apparent quickly: the skin becomes ‘bone dry’ and irritation such as itching may occur.
Too frequent applications can also lead to the treatment becoming less effective. Many sufferers then try to intensify the therapy further – which usually makes the problem even worse.
Another potential problem is so-called “compensatory sweating”: the body shifts sweating to other or adjacent areas.
If you feel that you are over-treating, it is best to suspend the treatment for at least six weeks. After that, you can resume the initial treatment.
