The most common reason why the treatment isn’t working well is that there is too much water in the tubs. Furthermore, a water level that is too high can quickly lead to skin irritation on the sides of the hands or feet (see ‘Skin irritation along the waterline?’).
The water level determines which areas of skin the current flows through. It is best to immerse only the lower third of your fingers or toes in the water. This allows the current to act evenly across the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet – where it is needed most.
If the water level is higher:
- more skin comes into contact with the water and the current density decreases,
- the current will tend to flow through the thinner layers of skin at the sides. This is the easier path for the current.
The consequences:
- The therapy is significantly less effective on the important, thicker areas of skin (palms/soles of the feet).
- The current density increases sharply at the sides, which can quickly lead to skin irritation along the waterline.
In short: the correct water level ensures better results and protects your skin.
